The pupal phase
The pupal phase
The eggs hatch into nymphs, predatory aquatic larvae. They feed on small insects and other aquatic larvae. The duration of the pupal phase varies according to the species, and can last several months or years.
The exuvia
The exuvia
When the nymph has reached its maximum size, it climbs out of the water onto a plant stem or other support. It attaches itself firmly and begins to undergo metamorphosis. The nymph's old skin, called the exuvium, splits open and an adult dragonfly emerges from this envelope.
The dragonfly
The dragonfly
Also known as the imago, is the flying insect that we generally associate with dragonflies. It has wings and can move by flying. Adult dragonflies are aerial predators that feed mainly on other insects in flight.
